Contemporary Yantra: Symmetrical Motifs in Glass with Ian Chadwick, Online Class, August 14,15, and September 12, 2026

Throughout history, the rule and compass have been key tools in the creation of geometric art—works that reveal order, symmetry, and deeper symbolic meaning. In Contemporary Yantra, participants will explore how these timeless tools and the principles they reveal can be encountered in kilnformed glass.

Led by artist Ian Chadick, whose internationally-known practice centers on geometric abstraction, this course will guide you through techniques for creating complex, visually layered patterns in glass. Students will follow Ian step by step through the design and construction of a 10" square yantra composition made completely of colored glass stringers and clear sheet glass. You will gain a deeper understanding of how geometry, kiln-glass, and individual aesthetics can converge to create dazzling visual experiences.

Rooted in the rich tradition of Tantric symbolism, the yantra—Sanskrit for “instrument for restraining or fastening”—is a meditative device designed to focus awareness and invite inner stillness. This class draws inspiration from yantras and other geometric art forms to help students develop their own linear, symmetrical designs that explore personal meaning, cultural context, and visual harmony.

Whether you're drawn to meditative design, arresting visuals, or the challenge of designing exacting patterns in glass, this course will teach you how to make work that feels at once grounded, mysterious, and utterly one-of-a-kind.

The class will happen over three sessions:

• The first two of these are Viewing Parties where you go through the video lesson chapter by chapter with your cohort and instructor Ian Chadwick. Students will be able to ask questions and get live answers throughout the sessions.
• The third live online session will take place several weeks later, after you’ve had time to try the technique. During the follow up, class members will review each others’ uploaded images of Contemporary Yantra projects. You’ll discuss what worked, what didn’t, and why.
