New to kiln-glass? Ready to polish some foundational skills? Either way, boost your creativity in the studio by upping your confidence in the basics of working with a kiln.
In this 3-hour live online class, you’ll learn remotely from your own home or studio, honing your studio basics with Ted Sawyer, the head of Bullseye’s Research and Education Department. Upon registration, you'll gain immediate access to the full 2.5-hour video, which includes demonstrations of Sentry keyed controllers and Sentry and Tap II touch screen controllers. You'll also be able to download the 19-page Class Guide, which includes support for understanding and writing basic firing programs. Through this class, you'll discover best practices for foundational skills such as:
- preparing shelves
- programming kilns
- working with firing cycles
- thinking strategically about studio essentials
The more comfortable you become with these fundamentals, the readier you’ll be to have fun in the studio. During your live online class session, you and your classmates will review selected portions of the class video and communicate with your instructor and one another using the Zoom chat feature. Once you’ve viewed core video chapters, you'll use the chat feature to ask questions and discuss shelf preparation and basic kiln firing strategies. Ted Sawyer will address questions live and discuss concepts and techniques shown in the class video.

We use Zoom for the live class sessions. Zoom recommends using their official desktop or mobile app for optimal performance. Only use the web browser interface if you cannot access the app—but be prepared for limited functionality.

- Speakers or headphones

Because class discussion and instruction often rely on visual details, use a decently sized viewing screen. A tablet may suffice, but phones should be avoided.
Operating System
The latest version of Windows or macOS is recommended. Note that Zoom requires the 64-bit version of Windows to run the desktop app.
