Break free from the boundaries of commercial molds and discover how to shape glass into unique sculptural forms using simply gravity, heat, and time.
In this live online workshop, artist Frank van den Ham shares insights from over 40 years of kilnforming mastery. Now retired from teaching in-person workshops, this live online class is how Frank continues to connect with students from around the world and to share his methods. Across four projects—two bowls and two scrolls—you’ll learn how to achieve dazzling custom forms without the use of commercial molds. Frank designed the variety of project demonstrations to serve all makers, with one bowl and scroll being shaped using coldshop machinery, and the remaining bowl and scroll being completed with hand tools only.
In the class's long-format video "Outside the Mold with Frank van den Ham," you will be guided through every stage of Frank's creative process—how he lays up his glass compositions, how he applies his deep technical knowledge to everything from coldworking to firing cycles, and of course how he achieves unique sculptural forms that you can easily adapt to help your own work stand out from the crowd. Your live online sessions with Frank will deepen your understanding and ability to apply it all in lasting, impactful ways.

We use Zoom for the live class sessions. Zoom recommends using their official desktop or mobile app for optimal performance. Only use the web browser interface if you cannot access the app—but be prepared for limited functionality.

Because class discussion and instruction often rely on visual details, use a decently sized viewing screen. A tablet may suffice, but phones should be avoided.
Operating System
The latest version of Windows or macOS is recommended. Note that Zoom requires the 64-bit version of Windows to run the desktop app.
