Non-Traditional Pâte de Verre with Evelyn Gottschall Baker, Online Class, October 26-27, and November 17, 2026

Discover methods you can use to re-create natural objects with intricate detail in kilnformed glass. In this class, you’ll learn how to produce three of the many natural forms that comprise artist Evelyn Gottschall Baker's catalog of work (in this case, a branch, a vertebra, and a red pepper). Putting into practice streamlined moldmaking methods, you'll replicate small found objects using glass powders mixed with an organic binder. This will result in a stable, durable, but easily carveable unfired glass model.

With Evelyn’s ‘dryworking’ techniques, a remarkable level of detail can be added to the work before it is fired. Put together, these steps will lead you to produce highly representational, multidimensional objects. And as a huge bonus, these processes don’t require any large-scale coldworking or grinding equipment. Simple hand tools are all that is needed, and everything can be done easily in a home studio. Along the way, Evelyn will discuss moldmaking strategies, firing considerations, tips for working with thicker objects, and some basics for working with hollow objects.

Not only will these methods equip you to express your glass through arresting realism, they can also be used to create novel abstract objects, to curate object groups that tell a larger conceptual story, and to make large assemblages using only small components and a small kiln. This live, online workshop includes:

The class will happen over three sessions:

• Sessions 1 and 2 are the Video Watch Party! You will go through the entire class video with Evelyn, stopping regularly for clarifying review. You will be able to type questions into the live chat window and the Teaching Assistant will work with Evelyn to address your questions in real time.
• Session 3 is Project Sharing! During Session 3, Evelyn will lead discussion and review of class projects that began implementing lessons from sessions 1 and 2.
