Description

Details

One of the most difficult challenges in kiln-formed glass is creating natural forms with intricate details. In this five-day workshop, you will discover and overcome the technical challenges of re-creating natural, found objects, including bones. You will learn how to make simple, reusable molds; how to make color samples; how to add details and shaping; and how to fire your pieces without relying on molds to retain detail.

On the first day, you will be guided through how to select natural objects, before embarking on a field trip to find appropriate specimens. (Simple bones will be provided if you choose to make one.) After returning to the classroom, you will use Pâte de Verre to make test samples of your found objects. Over the remainder of the workshop, you will make molds of these specimens, and, using the fired test samples as a color guide, mix the glass paste and fill the molds. Once your objects are dry, you will learn how to refine their shape, add intricate detail, and set up for successful firing without the use of molds. The class also covers how to overcome common technical challenges, such as shrinkage and grayness caused by binders, as well as how to develop successful firing schedules when you are applying the course’s methods in your home studio.

PrerequisitesIntermediate to advanced, knowledge of working with glass powders is helpful, but not required.
