Creating ultra-thin glassware is possible. In this 2.5 hour class, beginning and advanced students alike can enjoy creating a functional piece as thin as 1-3mm through the proper use of compression. By making two small coaster-sized tests for later reference, students will explore the distinct painterly effects compression can offer their design and color choices—whether soothing gradients or kinetic patterns. They will then prepare four layers of glass and design a dish that will be around 8 inches in diameter and only 2-3mm thick when fired.
Along with the unique visual and technical capabilities this class unlocks, it also provides a method for transforming small glass pieces into larger glassworks of exquisite color. Thin for the win!
