Becoming a master of kilncast glass often requires first becoming a student of wax and clay. In this class, artist Mark Abildgaard will teach you in-depth techniques for using the lost wax kilncasting method—wax and clay—to turn glass into forms that leave a serious impression.
After covering the foundational content he teaches in his class Sculpting the Void, Abildgaard will guide you through extended demonstrations and explorations of his lost wax processes. These will include advanced instructions in wax working, mold making, and kiln firing. You’ll learn how to use wax forms as inclusions in clay molds, how to create multiple elements in wax that can be combined to make complex forms, how to design and build a variety of clay molds for hollow core vessels, how to use a variety of modifiers to increase the durability of the basic plaster/silica mold, how to adjust firing and annealing schedules for individual projects, how to monitor a firing in progress, and how to build molds with reservoirs for glass.
This workshop is designed to help you become confident with lost wax methods, dexterous with the possibilities they provide, and excited about developing your own ideas for what to make next.
None. All experience levels welcome.
