Details

Students will explore the three-dimensional qualities of the printed image within kilnformed glass and experiment with the qualities of depth and flow.

The starting point of this workshop is to create image, text and pattern which can be fired permanently onto sheet glass surfaces. Through cutting, constructing, layering, and fusing, complex imagery can be achieved. We will then use the dynamic movement of the heated glass to make the images ‘swim’ inside the material as it melts into its final shape.

Different strategies on glassmaking will be taught, including creating imagery for prints, digital photography, drawing, and pattern making (by hand or with a computer). Stacks of glass will be fused, rearranged, stacked, and allowed to flow into specially constructed molds, with the intent of promoting the movement of the imagery. Students will finish their unique pieces using simple coldworking techniques.

Prerequisites: All levels welcome - some printing and kilnforming experience preferred. Please bring a laptop.
