Learn to blend crushed glass frits and powders to create functional pieces with custom colors and special effects. Students work from a library of samples to kilncast three discs made entirely from frit and powder. Two of the discs will be slumped into bowls: one shallow and open, the other taller and steep sided. The third disc, which is actually kilncarved in the first firing, can function interchangeably as a lid for the steep-sided bowl, as a base for either bowl, or as a small dish on its own.
You will work with commercially available containment systems and slumping molds, including an elevated drop-ring mold. Students will use coldworking methods to remove the rim from the drop-ring project as well as shaping and refining edges. Students will also build their own library of color tests to further explore frit tinting and color mixing.
There are no prerequisites and this course is suitable for anyone from absolute beginners to experienced kilnformers interested in investigating how to make colors that are otherwise difficult to achieve in kilncasting or pâte de verre.
