“When fusible glass was invented, it opened up a whole new range of possibilities for painters. The image trapped through light in glass is the perfect painting.”
- Narcissus QuagliataArtist Tim Carey developed his techniques for painting with glass under the tutelage of Narcissus Quagliata during their work on the jaw-dropping Resurrection Window project (a story told in the award-winning documentary, Holy Frit, directed by Justin Monroe).
Now it's your turn to learn from Tim Carey in this live online class. Learn his unique process for harnessing the light-infusing properties of glass for the pictorial powers of painting.* Create textures, brush strokes, gradients, lines, and shadows—all in your glasswork. Beyond techniques and information, you'll get unfiltered, madcap access to Carey's entire artistic process, from the making of specialty glass pieces, to troubleshooting potential surprises, to pondering next moves over a cold one. (*Although the class video focuses on portraiture, the methods it teaches can be applied to any expressive image.)
The class includes:
- A valuable Class Guide packed with helpful information
- Long-term access to A Painterly Portrait in Glass with Tim Carey, a long-format instructional video (1.5+ hours) that you can watch any where, any time
- The chance to ask questions in real time over Zoom with Tim Carey
The class will happen over two sessions:
- The first of these is a Viewing Party where you go through the video lesson chapter by chapter with your cohort and instructor Tim Carey. Students will be able to ask questions and get live answers throughout this session.
- The second live, online session will take place several weeks later, after you’ve had time to try the technique. During the follow up, students will review each others’ uploaded images of project work. You’ll discuss what worked, what didn’t, and why.
We believe this entire package is an exceptional way to learn! It’s an opportunity to get a thorough, step-by-step understanding of how to create painterly images in glass. So get ready to join two live Q&A sessions with artist Tim Carey and moderator Ted Sawyer, Bullseye's Director of Research and Education. You'll get to share your work, to inspire and be inspired, and to take your home studio to wonderful new dimensions.
Requirements
- We will be using Zoom for the live class sessions. For optimal streaming, Zoom recommends using their desktop program or mobile app. (Only use their web service if you cannot access the other options.) In addition, we strongly recommend using a desktop or laptop computer with all of the following: high-speed internet, a webcam, a microphone, and speakers. A tablet may suffice. Phones, however, should be avoided. Smartphone screens will be too small, and a landline phone will not allow for any interactivity.
- For additional help navigating Zoom, watch our Zoom orientation video.
- Prerequisites: All are welcome! The dynamic methods taught in the class can offer incredible, personalized leaps of skill to total beginners and advanced students alike.
